What’s up guys!
I had a reader ask me “what is your favorite location in the world? If you had to choose one place to live right now what would it be? Money and visa are no issue.”
This is a tough question to answer… I’ve been to some amazing places! Honestly I’ve had fun everywhere I went and I wouldn’t mind being stuck in any of the hot spots in south east Asia. My favorite place is constantly changing. It really just depends on my mood! Big city, small city, beach bum lifestyle?
OK enough with the bullshit. Time to decide… If money and visas were no issue… Then I would choose…
Koh Samui, Thailand
I’ve been having a blast traveling over the past few years but I will always cherish the months I stayed on Koh Samui island. It really is a special place. Allow me to explain why.
For me, Koh Samui strikes the perfect balance between partying and relaxation. You can hang out on Chewang Beach and get wasted at a raging beach party. Or you can stay on the other side of the island and lay in a hammock while listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore.
The island is small enough to give you that tropical island vibe but it’s developed enough that I would be happy living there long term. There are plenty of beer bars, several night clubs, GoGo bars, a shit load of massage parlors, many luxury resorts, gyms, movie theaters and even a shopping mall.
Some people say Koh Samui is too “touristy” and over developed… I can’t argue with them. If you want to live like Tom Hanks in Castaway then you should choose a different island. But for long term living I need some basic amenities.
And trust me, after living on an island for several months you will want to mix it up. You can only lay around on the beach so many days. It’s nice to be able to take a stroll through an air conditioned mall, buy a new pair of shoes, have dinner at a nice Italian restaurant and go to the cinema with your date. Ko Samui gives you these options! 🙂
But don’t sweat it. Koh Samui still has plenty of unspoiled beaches if you want to get away from the crowds. I recall having some wild times on this island. I dated several good girls I met on Thai Cupid and Thai Friendly. One I still stay in touch with to this day. I also mongered like a maniac around Soi Green Mango.
I already did a location review for Koh Samui so I don’t want to repeat myself. You can read the full post here. I just wanted to give you my top pick for number one location in the world. I truly believe that Koh Samui has it all. You can really live the Single Man’s Lifestyle on this island and it won’t cost you very much.
Obviously the Thai visa is a bitch… And your visa runs would involve an extra expensive flight from BKK to Samui and back… But if you got the visa situation sorted for a long stay then it would be perfect. 😀
